Exploring Texas Soccer: From Early Intercollegiate Games to Club Teams
Does Texas have men’s soccer? Well, they don’t have a varsity program. But they do field a club team run by students. The RHG docuseries notes that the 1914 Cactus yearbook told us men’s teams from UT Austin and Baylor played at least two soccer games in February of that year, which it claimed as the first such intercollegiate contests in the sport in Texas. The sport did not find a permanent home as a varsity pursuit, however.
Longhorn men have played intramural soccer for decades, with the club team coming into existence in 1964. Per their website, the “team typically consists of a dedicated roster of around 40 players training three nights a week and competing in both conference and non-conference matches each season.” Though not a varsity program with full university support, the team has posted some superb results over the years, including national club championships.
Before establishing its women’s varsity program in 1993, Texas did have a women’s club soccer team that had started in the mid-1970s.
